Detailed Itinerary for Char Dham Yatra

A well-planned itinerary ensures that you can focus on your spiritual journey without worrying about logistics. Below is a suggested itinerary for the Char Dham Yatra starting from Dehradun:

Start your trip by leaving Dehradun and traveling to Barkot, which will take you about six to seven hours and cover 180 kilometers. You will go through the charming hill station of Mussoorie, which is well-known for its agreeable weather and foggy appeal. Make a stop at the gorgeous Kempty Falls, where tumbling water creates a lovely setting for leisure. Until you get in Barkot, keep driving along winding roads surrounded by lush foliage. After you get there, settle into your hotel and relax, getting ready for the spiritual journey that lies ahead. In the tranquil surroundings of Barkot, take pleasure in a calm evening and a restful night’s sleep.

Drive 45 kilometers from Barkot to Janki Chatti, the starting point for your Yamunotri trek, early in the morning. Trek six kilometers to the holy Yamunotri Temple from here along picturesque pathways. When you get there, submerge yourself in the holy Yamuna River, which is thought to atone for sins and purify the soul. Explore the healing thermal springs in Janki Chatti and offer prayers at the temple devoted to Goddess Yamuna. Reflect on the day’s holy experiences when you return to Janki Chatti and drive to Barkot for the night after finishing your spiritual rites.

From Barkot start the picturesque 100-kilometer drive to Uttarkashi, which should take four or five hours. Enchanting views of rolling hills and meandering rivers can be seen along the way. When you arrive in Uttarkashi, pay a visit to the revered Vishwanath Temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva. Pause to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning architecture of the temple. Explore the local market in the evening to learn about the local way of life and buy mementos. Recharge for the next phase of your spiritual journey by spending a peaceful night at your hotel.

A peaceful journey of 100 kilometers each way, which will take about 3-4 hours, lies from Uttarkashi to Gangotri. The journey goes through the breathtaking scenery of the rugged mountains and the flowing Bhagirathi River. In Gangotri, take part in the morning Aarti in the Gangotri Temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Have a holy dip in the Bhagirathi River and feel the peaceful ambiance of this holy place. After completing your rituals, return to Uttarkashi for an overnight stay, relishing the spiritual and natural beauty experienced during the day.

From there, drive for about 220 kilometers to Guptkashi, which is a journey of around 8-9 hours. Along the way, you will see nice views of the Rudraprayag confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini, a sight to capture one’s soul. Then, wind through the quaint mountain villages and dense forests before reaching Guptkashi. On reaching, check into your hotel and take it easy for the evening. This town is spiritually energetic, being a place associated with Lord Shiva, so it sets the tone for your visit to Kedarnath.

Start with a short 30-kilometer drive to Gaurikund; the real trek will then begin, covering a 16-kilometer stretch to reach Kedarnath. Enjoy the scenic Himalayan paths as you pass by through towering peaks and pristine air all around. On reaching Kedarnath, pay your respects at the iconic Kedarnath Temple, situated amidst majestic mountains. Experience the spiritual energy and devotion of the evening Aarti. Spend the night in Kedarnath. Be in this sacred place, surrounded by divine vibrations from the temple.

Get up early to see a moment of pure spiritual connection at Kedarnath Temple during the morning Aarti. Trek back to Gaurikund after finishing your rites, taking in the scenery as you go. Return to Guptkashi by car from Gaurikund, where you can rest and recuperate following a day of spiritual and physical fulfillment. After visiting one of the most revered sites on the Char Dham circuit, spend the night in Guptkashi thinking back on your experience.

Begin a 190 km drive from Guptkashi to Badrinath, that will take approximately 7-8 hours. On the way, halt at Joshimath, an old town that possesses a strong heritage of spirituality as well as vistas. Then again, it continues through some sceneries in valleys and peak mountains to the last temple in the Char Dham circuit called Badrinath. In the evening, experience the Aarti at the Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The spiritual ambiance of the temple, coupled with the natural beauty of the surroundings, creates a truly divine experience. Stay overnight in Badrinath, soaking in the tranquility of this holy town.

Conclude your Char Dham Yatra with a 330 km drive back to Dehradun, which takes around 10-11 hours. Enroute, visit Mana Village, which is the last Indian village before the Tibetan border, and also explore Vyas Gufa, where it is believed that sage Vyasa composed the Mahabharata. See the beautiful confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers at Devprayag, which gives birth to the holy Ganga. Arrive in Dehradun with a heart full of spiritual fulfillment and cherished memories of a journey that has enriched both your soul and senses.
